# Variation must have at least one option to create on Shopify

###### When importing products from Square to Shopify, you may encounter the following error:

**__This guide explains why this error occurs and how to fix it by correctly creating option sets in Square.__**

### ❓__Why Does This Error Happen?__

Square and Shopify handle **product variations** differently:

* In **Shopify**, a variation **must be tied to an option.** For example, a T-shirt with **Size** as the option and **Large, Medium, Small** as the values.

* In **Square**, you can create variations like **XL, L, M** without explicitly defining what the option (e.g., Size).
||| 📌 So, when you try to import a Square product with variations but no option set, Shopify throws an error because it requires at least one option (like Size or Color) for each variation.

### 🛠️__ How to Fix This: Create Options in Square?__

To fix this issue, make sure your variations in Square are created using **option sets**. Here’s how:

✅ **__Method 1: Create Options Directly from a Product__**

* Log into your **Square Dashboard**.
* Go to **Items**.
* Open the product

* Select your Variations (Red,blue, etc)

* Click **Save as Option Set**.
* Provide a internal Option name such as (Sizes) and click on Save

|| Now, this option set is available for use when creating new products.

✅ **__Method 2: Create Options from the Options Tab__**

* Log into your **Square Dashboard**.
* Click on **Options → Create and option**.

* Type a new option name (e.g., **Material** or **Fit**) and option value ( e.g **cotton**, **polyester**)

|| 📝 Once saved, this option set will also appear in your main Options tab and can be reused for other products.

###### 🔁 __Re-import the Product:__

After creating the proper option set in Square:

1. Go back to your Square Integration app.
2. Re-import the updated product into Shopify.
