This means existing Shopify gift cards cannot be imported or synced to Square directly. By creating the gift card through the app, the GAN number is captured at the point of creation, making the full Shopify-to-Square sync possible.** --- ## __How It Works__ When you create a gift card through the app, the following happens automatically: 1. The gift card is created in **Shopify** first. 2. The app captures the gift card code (GAN number). 3. The gift card is synced to **Square** with the same code and balance. 4. The card becomes redeemable on both your **Shopify storefront** and at your **Square POS** --- ## __Where to Find It__ ![](https://storage.crisp.chat/users/helpdesk/website/-/2/9/4/d/294d0430bb41e400/image_1iglcds.png) In your **Shopify admin**, navigate to: **Apps → Square Integration DPL → Gift Cards** The Gift Cards page has two tabs: * **Square** — gift cards created in Square and synced to Shopify * **Shopify** — gift cards created through the app and synced to Square To create a new gift card, click **Create shopify gift card** in the top-right corner of the page. --- ## __Creating a Gift Card__ * **__Step 1: Open the creation form__** On the Gift Cards page, click **Create shopify gift card** in the top-right corner. ![](https://storage.crisp.chat/users/helpdesk/website/-/2/9/4/d/294d0430bb41e400/image_fnsuz3.png) * **__Step 2: Fill in the gift card details__** ![](https://storage.crisp.chat/users/helpdesk/website/-/2/9/4/d/294d0430bb41e400/image_9x0wfu.png) * **Gift card code** (optional) — Enter an 8–20 character alphanumeric code, click **Generate** for a random one, or leave blank to have a code auto-assigned on save. * **Initial value** (required) — Enter the starting balance (e.g., $10). * **Expiry date** (optional) — Select an expiry date, or leave blank for a card that never expires. Once the expiry date is reached, the gift card is automatically deactivated and can no longer be redeemed. * **Customer** (optional) — Search for and select an existing Shopify customer to link the card to, or leave blank. You cannot create a new customer from within this form. * **Notes** (optional) — Internal notes for your reference. These are not synced to Square. --- * **__Step 3: Save__** Click **Save**. Look for the **Synced to Square** status badge to confirm sync was successful. You can click the gift card number to view the corresponding record in Shopify. --- ## __Important Notes__ * **Existing Shopify gift cards cannot be synced to Square.** Because Shopify's API masks GAN numbers, only gift cards created through this app can be synced to Square. The GAN must be captured at the moment of creation. * **Notes are for internal use only** — anything added in the Notes field will not be sent to Square. * **You cannot create new customers here.** The Customer field only allows you to search and select an existing customer. Leave it blank if no customer needs to be linked. * **Expiry dates automatically deactivate the card.** After the expiry date, the card is deactivated and cannot be redeemed, even if there is a remaining balance. * **Gift card codes cannot be changed after creation.** Choose your code carefully — once saved, the GAN is permanent. --- ## Frequently Asked Questions ###### Why can't I import my existing Shopify gift cards to Square? Shopify's API masks gift card codes (GAN numbers) for security reasons. Because the code is hidden, the app has no way to read it and pass it to Square. Gift cards must be created through the app so the GAN is captured at the point of creation and can be synced. ###### Can I use a custom gift card code or will one be auto-generated? Both options are available. In the **Gift card code** field, you can type a custom 8–20 character alphanumeric code, click **Generate** to get a random one, or leave the field blank — a code will be auto-assigned when you click Save. ###### Where can the gift card be redeemed once it is created? The gift card can be redeemed on your Shopify online store and at any Square POS terminal once it shows **Synced to Square** in the Gift Cards list. ###### Can I link the gift card to a customer during creation? Yes. Use the **Customer** field to search for an existing Shopify customer and link them to the gift card. New customers cannot be created from within this form — add them in Shopify first, then come back to create the gift card. ###### What happens if I don't set an expiry date? The gift card never expires and remains active until it is fully redeemed or manually deactivated. ###### Will the notes I add appear in Square? No. Notes are visible only within the app and are not synced to Square. ###### Can I create a gift card for a specific amount other than a round number? Yes. The **Initial value** field accepts any amount — it does not need to be a round number. ---
