How Shopify PickUp Order Sync Works with Square.
Overview
- The Shopify Order Sync to Square feature allows pickup orders created in Shopify to sync into Square through the app.
- Once synced, fulfillment status updates can also synchronize between both platforms based on the enabled sync settings.
- This feature is designed specifically for merchants managing pickup orders across Shopify and Square.
Prerequisites
Enable Shopify Pickup Order Sync:
Before order synchronization can begin, the Sync Shopify Pickup Orders setting must be enabled. This setting can be enabled through:
- Onboarding setup flow
- App configuration/settings page
If the Setting is Disabled
- Shopify pickup orders will not be fetched
- Shopify orders will not sync to Square
Supported Order Types
Shopify Pickup Orders Only
Currently, the integration supports syncing only:
- Shopify Pickup Orders
Unsupported Order Types
The following order types are not supported:
- Shipping orders
- Delivery orders
- Local delivery orders
- Any non-pickup order types
Product Matching Requirement
Successful Sync Conditions
Orders will sync successfully when:
- Product SKUs match between Shopify and Square
- Products are properly linked
Failed Sync Conditions
Order sync will fail if:
- Product SKU does not match
- Product is not linked
- SKU is missing on either platform
Fulfillment Status Sync
Fulfillment Synchronization Behavior
Once an order is successfully synced:
- Fulfillment status updates can also sync between Shopify and Square
Supported Fulfillment Sync
- Shopify fulfillment updates sync to Square
- Square fulfillment updates sync to Shopify
Conditional Fulfillment Sync Behavior
Fulfillment synchronization only works for the enabled sync direction.
Example 1: One-Way Sync Enabled
If only Shopify → Square sync is enabled:
- Fulfillment updates sync only from Shopify to Square
Example 2: Two-Way Sync Enabled
If both sync directions are enabled:
- Fulfillment updates sync both ways
Unsupported Behaviors & Limitations
Shopify Order Cancellation Sync
If a synced order is cancelled in Shopify:
- The cancellation status will not sync to Square
Reason
The Square API does not support cancellation or modification of paid orders after synchronization.
Result
- Shopify order may appear cancelled
- Square order will remain unchanged
Order Line Item Updates
Changes made to order line items in Shopify are not synced to Square.
Unsupported Line Item Updates
The following changes are not supported after sync:
- Quantity changes
- Product additions
- Product removals
- Variant changes
- Price adjustments
Reason
Square API limitations prevent modification of paid orders after synchronization.
Important Notes
- Only Shopify pickup orders are supported
- SKU matching is mandatory
- Fulfillment sync depends on enabled sync direction
- Shopify order cancellation sync is not supported
- Order line item updates are not supported
- Existing users must grant access before using the feature
