How Shopify Order Sync Works with Square (Shipping & PickUp Orders)
Overview
- The Shopify Order Sync to Square feature syncs orders placed in your Shopify store into Square.
- You can now control this separately for two order types: Shipping (Ship) orders and Pickup orders.
- Once synced, fulfillment status and tracking details can be synchronized between both platforms based on the enabled sync settings.
- This feature is designed for merchants who fulfill Shopify orders by shipping and/or in-store pickup and want those orders reflected in Square.
The Two Sync Settings

Order sync from Shopify to Square is now controlled by two independent settings, found under Configurations >> Sync Shopify Orders to Square:
- Enable automatic order sync from Shopify Shipping Orders to Square — When enabled, new paid Shipping orders placed in your Shopify store will automatically appear in Square.
- Enable automatic order sync from Shopify PickUp Orders to Square — When enabled, new paid PickUp orders placed in your Shopify store will automatically appear in Square.
Prerequisites
Enable the Sync Setting
Before a given order type can sync, its setting under Sync Shopify Orders to Square must be enabled.
These settings can be enabled through:
- App onboarding for new installations.
- App configuration >> Configurations >> Sync Shopify Orders to Square (for existing users).
If a Setting is Disabled
- Orders of that type (Shipping or PickUp) will not be fetched.
- Those Shopify orders will not sync to Square.
How We Determine Which Square Location an Order Syncs To
Which Square location an order lands in depends on whether the order was already fulfilled or still unfulfilled at the time it's placed in Shopify:
- If the order is unfulfilled when it's created:
The order syncs to Square using your connected Shopify-to-Square location mapping; the same mapping you set up for inventory sync. No extra setup is needed for these orders.
- If the order is already fulfilled when it's created (for example, orders imported as fulfilled, or created and fulfilled in one step):
Shopify doesn't tell us which location these orders belong to. Because of this, we can't automatically match them to your connected locations. Instead, these orders will always sync to the single Square location you choose in: Configurations >> Choose Square Location

This means: if your store has multiple Shopify locations, all already-fulfilled orders will sync to this one selected Square location, regardless of which Shopify location they actually came from. Orders that are unfulfilled at creation will still route correctly to their matching location, and are not affected by this setting.
What this means for you:
- If you only use one location, this has no impact on you.
- If you use multiple locations and regularly import or create orders as already-fulfilled, double-check that the location selected in Choose Square Location is the one you want those orders to default to.
Supported Order Types
Supported
- Shopify Shipping orders (controlled by the Shipping Orders toggle)
- Shopify PickUp orders (controlled by the PickUp Orders toggle)
Unsupported
- Local delivery orders
- Any other non-shipping, non-pickup order types
Product Matching Requirement
Successful Sync Conditions
Orders will sync successfully when:
- Product SKUs match between Shopify and Square
- Products are properly linked
Failed Sync Conditions
Order sync will fail if:
- Product SKU does not match
- Product is not linked
- SKU is missing on either platform
Fulfillment & Tracking Sync
Fulfillment Synchronization Behavior
Once an order is successfully synced:
- Fulfillment status updates can sync between Shopify and Square (both directions).
- For Shipping orders, tracking numbers and carrier details also sync between both platforms.
Supported Fulfillment Sync
- Shopify fulfillment updates (tracking number, carrier, fulfilled status) sync to Square
- Square shipment updates (tracking number, carrier, shipped status) sync to Shopify
Adding Tracking in Square (Shipping Orders)
- Go to Orders & Payments > Orders > Shipments > To-do.
- Select the order, then click Ship items (or open the order and select Add tracking information).
- Enter the Tracking number and choose a Carrier (USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL, or Other).
- Click Done. The item is marked as shipped in Square.

Adding Tracking in Shopify (Shipping Orders)
- Open the order in Shopify Admin.
- Fulfill the order, add a tracking number, and mark it as fulfilled.
- The fulfillment and tracking details sync to Square, marking the matching shipment as shipped.
Unsupported Behaviors & Limitations
Order Line Item Updates
Changes made to order line items in Shopify are not synced to Square.
Unsupported Line Item Updates
The following changes are not supported after sync:
- Quantity changes
- Product additions
- Product removals
- Variant changes
- Price adjustments
Reason
Square API limitations prevent modification of paid orders after synchronization.
Already-Fulfilled Orders and Location Routing
Already-fulfilled Shopify orders always sync to the Square location chosen under Choose Square Location, not to a location based on the individual order. See "How We Determine Which Square Location an Order Syncs To" above for details.
Verifying Sync Status

You can confirm an order's sync status without leaving Shopify:
- Go to Shopify Admin > Apps > Square Integration DPL > Orders.
- Select the Shopify Orders and Square Orders tab.
- Each row shows the Order Sync Status, Order state, Fulfillment Status, and quick links to view the order on both Shopify and Square.
Important Notes
- Shopify → Square order sync is now controlled by two independent settings: Shipping orders and PickUp orders.
- SKU matching is mandatory.
- Fulfillment status syncs both ways; carrier tracking syncs both ways for Shipping orders.
- Order line item updates are not supported after sync.
- Already-fulfilled orders always sync to the Square location chosen in Configurations >> Choose Square Location — not necessarily the location the order was actually placed from.
- Existing users must grant access before using the feature.
